Using Spill Containment Pallets Help Provide Safety For All

By Katrina Wheeler

The use of chemicals in many of the processing or manufacturing plants, across the country, brings with it dangers if and when the containers cause a spill. The many different chemicals can impact the safety and health of the personnel working around them and are not to be treated lightly. A problem can be avoided by using a material handling system that utilizes spill containment pallets within it.

It does not matter what type of material is used to construct the drums, barrels or even the tanks that are used for the shipment and storage of chemicals. They will leak if they are exposed to rough handling or if they come in with rust or corrosion on them. They can be hit with many of the moving machinery or fork lifts and can fall from their places.

What turns a leak into a spill is that the chemicals get onto the floor or a processing surface. At that point, the procedures mandated by the EPA will come into effect. This will usually require the shutting down of the line it occurred on and moving all personnel out of the area. The non contaminated material will be moved and barriers will be set up.

The personnel are moved into areas that are still working or sent to idle in the break areas. They may be sent home depending on the size of the spill and the codes promulgated by the local authorities. The hazardous material handling team will be called and will take over the area. They will analyze what has happened and start the process of reports, and clean up.

Neutralizing the chemical will be the first order of business and then the collection of this material takes place. All of this will have to be contained in a labeled drum or barrel for proper disposal. Any supplies used in this collection will go into this container as well. After this collection of material a test will be performed to determine whether it has all been removed. The last process is the complete custodial cleaning of the area.

Procedures for the recovery of a spill will not have to go into effect if there is no spill. The leaking of the drum or barrel will go into the reservoir that is in the bottom of this specially designed containment pallet. They come in enough different sizes that all of the contents of these containers will fit in that reservoir. This is an easy way to keep the plant running and all personnel are safe from any chemical spills.

Any leak noticed in the containers on one of these pallets can be taken care of by moving the pallet out of the area. The production can continue as another pallet can be brought into the area. The leaking drum, on the pallet, can be moved to a cleaning area where it can be emptied and the pallet can be neutralized and cleaned up.

Spill containment pallets do just that. They contain the leaks and prevent the spills that will cause the regulations to be needed. They will help safeguard your employees and the physical plant. They are constructed from some of the strongest, non reactive materials and will last a very long time.
