Best Ways To Learn Modern Hebrew

By Katy Kline

Hebrew was once considered a dead language with no native speakers, although it continued to be used by academics and religious leaders. It was revived as a spoken language in the mid 19th century and today is spoken by millions of people, many of whom live in Israel. It is the official language of the state of Israel and if you are wanting to learn modern Hebrew, there are many ways of going about doing this that are very effective.

Instead of just learning from a textbook where one is never sure how to pronounce the words, or learning from an audiobook where one never sees a written text, many of these methods combine all the elements of speaking, reading and writing in a tried and tested manner. Internet sites, particularly interactive ones, provide an exciting new approach to learning basic skills.

Many different courses are available and so some research may be required to find out which ones are most helpful. The content needs to be well constructed, starting with the basics and gradually adding to this step by step. The methods of learning should be tried and tested. Some approaches rely more on CDs with some reading material whilst others rely more on group sessions.

Many of these series of courses have sessions designed for those who have no experience at all with the language. They focus on the student acquiring a basic vocabulary, learning the alphabet (Aleph Bet) and the vowel system. The goal is for the beginner to be able to hold a basic conversation by the end of the course.

Virtual classes provide a supportive environment for students. They can log in and chat with a well qualified teacher and other students. The groups usually consist of six to eight students and they practice together with one another, building up confidence along the way. This is a supportive environment where mistakes can be made without embarrassment as everyone is learning together.

Online websites offer information about the dates and times when courses are available. Prices of the different courses can vary greatly and there are even free video courses available online. The best courses may be costly but when weighed up against the quality of what is offered, it is often well worth the money.

Upon registration one may be sent various materials. These may include workbooks and headphones with microphones to chat with a teacher and other students. One may even receive letter stickers to transform a keyboard.

Remember that to learn modern Hebrew requires some persistence as it will not happen overnight. Research has revealed that it can take as much as three months of daily practice to develop the necessary muscles in the mouth for the speaking of a new language. The more you begin to master basic conversational skills, the more confident you will feel to use these skills in every day life.
