Tips For Taking The DLAB

By Michael D. Jennings

The Defense Language Aptitude Battery test or otherwise known as the DLAB, is one of the most difficult tests in the military services. It's not because it asks difficult questions, but because it will test you in a manner you aren't prepared for. On top of that, the consequences of the exam may be life altering. For people that are taking the exam, you either are trying to become a armed forces linguist or applying for a premier language based program. So to aid you with this, we have developed a number of recommendations that you should take prior to taking the exam.

Be sure to look for resources online. The military will tell you to take the test but will not let you know what the test is. Don't undertake it blindly but rather get the layout and type of questions you should expect. The DLABPrep.com is a excellent resource that not only details the examination but also has a DLAB Practice Test you are able to take.

Be sure to check your English grammar rules. The test is based off a made up language and requires you to respond to questions by shifting the grammar structure of the sentence. If you don't know what a Direct Object is, then you'll have a problem answering the question.

Make sure you talk with those that have taken the exam. Previous test takers can provide you really good insight about what to expect. Over time the policies and questions change. So ask those who have taken the test and get an up-to-date assessment on what to expect.

Make sure that the morning of the exam you eat a great breakfast and get the right amount of sleep. The DLAB Test is difficult and you need your head in tip-top condition. So the night before the test, retire for the night early and in the morning get yourself a good breakfast.

When you go it to take the exam, make sure you pick an appropriate computer. Select one that is far from windows or anything that makes disturbances like an ac unit, fan, vent, etc. It is best to remove yourself from distractions like these. It could appear absurd but during the exam, you will need to focus on very small sound differences and something like a vent can genuinely distract you.

Taking these suggestions won't assure you good results on the DLAB but it will aid you tremendously. If you do fail the DLAB though, please know that it is possible to take the DLAB six months later. Additionally, no matter how many times you take the DLAB, only your greatest score is going to be sent in. So make sure you take the DLAB often and very early.
