A Look At Fire Fighter Training

By Marla Mills

When people were young and someone asked what they wanted to be when they grew up, many answered a fireman. There is something about that job that always seemed to capture a youngster's imagination. It has to be said that there is slightly more to the job than spraying water at a burning building. To achieve their high standards of professionalism all prospective recruits have to undergo fire fighter training.

No two fires are exactly the same, there are certain areas where there are similarities. Maybe you will have heard of something known as the fire triangle. This illustrates the three things a blaze needs to survive, these are oxygen, heat and fuel. Were you to remove anyone element the blaze will extinguish. One thing that the crews do when they attend an emergency call is decide which element they are going to remove.

Whenever you see a firetruck attending a blazing building, you will notice hoses run out across the ground and the water will be aimed at the flames. The water is actually being used to cool the area. To put it another way they are eliminating the heat side from that triangle shape previously mentioned.

Certain crew members will also be dressed in breathing equipment. There will also be someone in charge assessing how much air a team has before sending in the next crew. Not something that the average person can do, so they have all had special instruction in the use of this equipment.

Notice the axes and pry bars that these breathing apparatus teams are carrying. They will enter the blaze and physically break apart the fire. Again referring to the triangle this time they are removing any fuel that the blaze could feed itself with. Operating within the flames themselves is not for the faint hearted and only those who are trained do so.

Other specialized instruction might take place depending on where the crew is based. For example the skills needed at a major airport will be totally different to those required to fight a blaze in a residential setting. Aviation fuel can be very volatile, and so there is often flame retardant foam deployed. If this is used incorrectly then the flames can erupt through the foam blanket.

You will often see these crews attending serious highway incidents. These crews carry a wide variety of specialized equipment. This can include cutting tools which are used to help extract victims from damaged vehicles. If cuts are made in the wrong places then even more harm can happen to the victim.

Maybe the schoolboy dream involves driving the firetruck with the siren and lights going. In reality it isn't like driving your family car, a whole different way of driving has to be learned. These are obtained at a specialist driving school. Even then the firetrucks all handle differently depending on how much water they are carrying.

Perhaps now it is easier to understand why fire fighter training is so important. It is no wonder why a fireman is regarded as such an important member of a community. It does take a special type of person to become part of these crews, but it is a satisfying job for those lucky enough to make the grade.
