Varieties Of Tools For Water Well Drilling

By Daphne Bowen

Powerful equipment is needed in boring wells. This way, the time taken to accomplish the job is reduced and the drilling is done to considerable depths. The focus is on use of affordable options without compromising the quality of the work. Tools for water well drilling should be carefully selected with regard to the material to be drilled through and the desired depth.

The options are not that many but still the geology of the site has to be taken into account. Many of these tools have to be machine operated as opposed to manual operation. Nowadays, the available machines are advanced such that the drilling job is done very fast and the depths reached are commendable too. Machines used in boring are often times referred to as just rigs.

Jetting uses a pipe to force water to flow down a drill pump and come out through a narrow spout. This water jet leads to loosening of the sediments. As the water flows back, it takes with it cuttings to the pit used for settling. The water is then returned back to the pipe. The pipe used for drilling is hanged down from a trivet and rotated using hands so as to keep the hole straight.

A cable tool is a replacement of manual drillers which were in common use during the past. The entire equipment is referred to as just tools. Their use is in elevating and bringing down cables made from steel. A bailer removes the cuttings made. The water in the hole should be kept at a certain volume to suspend the cuttings and allow for easy removal.

The machinery can be anything from a modest skid powered winch having a tripod to complex pulley sets and also drums whose mast is enormous. The cable tools of larger rigs are mounted on top of a truck bed or trailer and require hydraulic motors in raising or lowering the mast and rotation of cable drums.

Mud rotary equipment require a mast sturdy, drilling pipes having threaded joint and big cutting bits in their assembly. For a further refinement in the drilling process, clay is mixed with special well drilling material in water to achieve an enhanced capability of lifting the cutting. The fluid is referred to as mud or drilling mud.

Mud rotary tools are several. They are placed in two broad categories. The first one is the table drive type. In this, the drilling pipes are turned in a rotating motion near the base of these tools. Top-head type requires the pipes to be turned using hydraulic motors at the upper pipe end.

Both of these categories are attached to a raising mechanism which functions to lift and lower the pipes along the length of the mast. Swivels in both of them give a chance for the mud drilled to be taken out while the process of boring still goes on. This saves considerably on time and energy for both the client and the drilling company, the depth achieved is commendable and the work is done within a short period.
