Why New York Traffic Occurs

By Leslie Ball

New York City is among the biggest and highly populated cities in the world. In this city there are quite a lot of movements from people, trains, motorbikes, bicycles to vehicles. You may seldom see tricycles as well as animals like dogs and cats. Another way of moving of goods is also the cart. All these movements add up to the various causes of New York traffic.

Traffic means a certain number of users e. G. Vehicles of a given means of transport or communication for instance road that use it at any one given time. When users of the transport means surpass a certain amount then movement is hindered. This therefore means that when the road is overcrowded the vehicles move at a slow pace to get to their destinations. The slow pace is because of the excess number of cars using a road at that point in time.

The New York City super highways are big with some exceeding five lanes. One may thus wonder why there is congestion in this city. A major reason may be that the influx or numbers of vehicles that are entering the highway are more than those that are coming out. So this congestion is hampered in the highway by several factors and not only the size of the road or lanes available.

For instance when an accident or incident takes place right at the center of the highway. Then traffic jams will occur because of this. Vehicles frequently brake when avoiding ramming each other. Accidents and or incidents can cause these jams; but accidents and or incidents can also be caused by road jams. These accidents can result to various lanes being closed for a while.

NY City is a continuously developing town. You will therefore find large road constructions going on. This may be to accommodate the increasing number of vehicles. The City can alternatively be building of new roads, expansion of existing ones or repair and maintenance of the existing roads. This works result to road disturbances. Drivers may be diverted to narrow roads or advised on alternative routes to allow for this works.

The City also experiences adverse weather conditions. Like heavy downpour or snowfall. Drivers are compelled to drive slow and cautiously. The roads are slippery and the view is unclear. Due to this they spend more time on the road hence consuming more fuel. The cost of travel also goes high during such a time. When a police officer is booking a motorist for a traffic offense may also cause a road jam.

Due to the vehicle jam menace the New York City council is faced with the challenge of finding ways of reducing it. The basic tenet being the available road network must be able to support the available vehicle capacity. That is equating supply and demand. Road networks are a very costly, on-going, long term process.

New York City can also try other ways of reducing traffic that are being used in other cities so as to solve its own . These include ramp metering whereby cars are allowed to access roads at timed intervals. This is known to lower accidents and increase speeds. The other is also allocation of certain lanes with high occupancy.
