Children With Delays In Communication Skills Are Helped By Social Thinking Therapists In Houston, TX

By Lelia Hall

All people and children above a certain age use societal thinking every day. It is the act of considering how they interact with other individuals. There are social thinking therapists in Houston, TX available to aid children who do not develop those skills on their own.

When one person talks to another, unspoken communication takes place along with the words. How to sense these subtle signals are learned from the time a baby is born. But, there are babies who do not develop the ability normally. In spite of having a normal to high level of intelligence, this ability is beyond their comprehension.

Many can score high on IQ tests and have limited ability when it comes to learning the social nuances. Most commonly those with autism, ADHD and Aspergers syndrome experience this lack. Therapists work to develop their communicative skills and the processing of social impressions in children and adults.

Research into the topic supports the validity of teaching social thinking to people who score close to normal and significantly above normal on standardized IQ tests. Children who learn this perception naturally are referred to as neurotypical. One method of the training of those who are lacking is called ILAUGH. This acronym represents the many aspects of how knowledge is applied to the acquisition of social skills.

From the first time an infant responds to his mothers touch he is building skills needed for language and verbal interaction. The toddler is already beginning to develop societal awareness. The more speaking and listening to others speak, the more he develops awareness of how others feel.

The four year old who is neurotypical shows that he can understand that other people are thinking their own thoughts. When he is six, he will comprehend that people have both good and bad qualities. He will discover ways to manipulate other children.

Without coming to this realization, a child is unable to solve problems, understand and interpret speaking and reading comprehension. That lack of knowledge will make it impossible to succeed academically. The autistic child or one with some kind of learning disorder will be delayed in acquiring that comprehension.

Those who provide therapy know he must learn in a very direct way. Although it is difficult, he can at sometime know that other children consider his thoughts and feelings as well as those of other children. When that fact is recognized, he will be able to learn other things such as academics.

Even the skill of making eye contact as communication takes place requires special teaching methods for this child. Therapists study how the neurotypical child acquires this and other sociable skills. They then develop methods of helping the child with autism who is high-functioning or has Aspergers syndrome.

One such method is the ILAUGH Model of Social Thinking. It is used by professional therapists and by parents. For the therapist it gives them a way to discover the students strong points and focus on reinforcing them.

The goal is to show this child that communication skills and academics are related. Learning one facilitates the learning of the other. The student needing these skills can talk about how he feels. He needs to also learn to recognize and talk about the feelings of other.
