How To Apply For Train Driver Training And Get The Train Driving License

By Leslie Ball

If you are thinking of what you need to join the profession of train drivers, what is involved, and how to get started, then you are on the right page. There are very few documents on the internet that offers comprehensive information on how to apply for train driver training.

The course is not restricting in terms of qualification. In fact, one does not need very high academic records like the ones necessary for pilots. What matters more are the personal traits such as self-discipline, keen observation of safety procedures, quick and accurate decision- making and the ability to stay away from the family for several weeks. Although the money reward is great, it cannot be the basis for joining the profession as there are several other opportunities to feel lonely, bored, and dissatisfied.

However, before making your application for the course, make sure that you meet the basic qualifications. In most countries, the minimum age requirement is 18 years. However, it may be 21 in some countries. You also need to pass a background check and the drug screen check. Lastly, you just need to be able to handle emergencies by yourself, and stay away from home for days, weeks and sometimes months.

With the above qualifications, it is time to attend the formal training. This involves both the hand in experience course and classroom course. Normally, it can last for weeks or months. Most prospective drivers choose to train in a school that is operated by a railroad company. Here, there are limitless opportunities to learn through practical experience. However, one could also opt for a community college where he/he attains an associate's degree in the railroad operations.

Gather as much information as possible in regards to the college you intend to attend. This could be done by physically visiting the college or visiting their website. Inquire on matters such as the entry requirement, the course duration, the fee structure, and the course structure. Once the course is about to begin, go ahead and apply.

When ready, complete the necessary documentation and prequalification tests and pay the required fee to start the classes. The college staff should help you through in case of any difficulty in the process. Once all is done, you should be ready to begin your courses.

After the course completion, you still have a long way to go. The main area of focus is gaining the required experience. It is advisable to start in an entry-level job such as a laborer, a conductor, a brakeman, or even a rail yard worker. In some cases, you may gather the required experience from beginning as a bus driver. In addition to this, you need to pass the exams such as the federal licensing exam.

There are instances where you still have to attend classes as part of the training. This in addition to simulators and hand on experience should prepare you for federal licensing exams and the final continues assessments for licensing.
