How A Spill Containment Berm Can Help Prevent Environmental Catastrophes

By Leanne Goff

There can be no doubt that chemical and toxic pollution is one of the biggest threats to the environment. Unfortunately, accidents happen regularly and it is vital that they are dealt with immediately, competently and effectively. This can only be accomplished if there are competent people present and if those people are in possession of the correct equipment. A spill containment berm is certainly one of the most important pieces of equipment that should be available at all times.

Having the right equipment to prevent the spreading of pollution, however, is only the very first step in dealing with a problem. Having the proper equipment at hand can do much to help prevent spills from spreading. The next steps are important too. It is necessary to make sure that the pollutants are neutralized, removed from the site and transported to a site that is properly equipped to dispose of the hazardous materials.

While containing the pollution is vital and an immediate priority, it is also imperative to be able to make sure that the damage caused are limited or eliminated. This requires different equipment and methods. These days there are agents that are specially designed to absorb pollutants or to accelerate the rate at which the pollutants degrade. Unfortunately, not all toxins and chemicals are bio degradable.

One of the most exciting new developments is the development of new agents that not only neutralizes the pollutants, but also renders them into a product that can actually be used to manufacture a variety of asphalt and rubber products. In this way many pollutants are becoming part of road surfaces, tyres and even other rubber products. This, of course, is a win win situation and holds much promise for the future.

Chemicals and toxins that cannot be neutralized with the use of these agents need a different approach. In many cases the water that is polluted is separated from the toxins, much in the same way that cream is separated from milk. The toxins are then sucked into large containers which are transported to sites designed to dispose of the chemicals safely and under strict control.

Unfortunately pollution clean up operations are extremely time consuming and expensive. That is why most authorities, both local and national set certain priorities. Pollution in remote areas or in areas at the coat where there is vigorous wave action is largely ignored and nature is allowed to deal with the issue in time. Sensitive wildlife areas, tourism hot spots and densely populated areas receive the highest priority.

Every company or person that deals with potentially harmful materials should be ready and prepared to deal with disasters. It is imperative that proper policies are in place in case of accidents. Training of crews dealing with such chemicals should be a very high priority. Of course, it is imperative that all crews dealing with toxins and harmful chemicals are equipped with the means to deal with accidents.

Pollution is bad news for all concerned, including the environment. It is imperative that spills are limited as soon as possible and as effectively as possible. A spill containment berm can do much to help achieve this aim. Of course, it would be better to prevent such catastrophes altogether.
