Spill Containment Berms For Safety

By Helene Norris

In most situations, in particular those that involve potential risks from toxic or harmful substances, the number one priority should be safety. Even if the materials are not considered to be hazardous, but may pose a danger is spilled, the best option to avoid accidents is to keep it confined to a defined area. The most effective way to achieve this goal is generally through the use of spill containment berms.

The basic purpose of any berm is to serve as barrier that prevents one substance or environment from intermingling with another. Since they are used in so many different circumstances, there are nearly 100 variations of this product. Though some are quite similar to each other, there are slight design variances that allow them to perform a wide variety of functions.

As varied as the available models is the number of substances and circumstance that these products may be used to handle. They control the flow of virtually any type of liquid from water to most chemicals and acids. Solids such as grains, minerals, dirt, rice, rocks, sand and many more are easily contained within these walls.

Barrier systems come in three basic types; pallets, flow-stop walls and tarps. These are actually very generalized terms describing several dozens of varieties within each individual category. While they all serve the same base purpose, they all handle their function in different ways that are catered for the substances they may have contact with.

In situations where flowing materials are kept inside containers such as barrels and boxes, they are commonly stored on special pallets. This type of berm is very popular in warehouses and storage spaces, as well as on ships. Their appearances vary quite a bit but in general they all feature some sort of opening like cups, holes or grates, through which any leaking product enters a holding zone and awaits a clean up team.

One of the more versatile options is the flow-stop barrier. They can be used in storage situations as well as quickly deployed walls during an emergency situation. The range of available styles is extremely wide, stretching from solid formations in multiple heights and widths to L-shaped sectionals that vary in lengths and can be hooked together to make an enclosure of any size, as well as inflatable hose like tubes that fit securely in odd shapes and uneven terrain.

Tarps are mostly used when one needs to store or do maintenance on a vehicle. They provide protective covering for the ground and come in an immense range of sizes from small enough to hold a motorcycle, to large enough for a jumbo jet. These products are equally varied but basically they all form a solid holding zone by framing the sheeting with collapsible borders of some type.

Spill containment berms come in a variety of materials and are built to safely confine most any substance to a designated area. To meet the varied demands of their job, these products are made in many sizes, styles and shapes. They function equally well in emergency situations as they do when used for both short and long term storage.
