Making College Decisions Early in Your Life

By Franklin Skribbit

When you know that you are going to start making college campus visits, you should be prepared to make the most of each visit. Deciding between colleges is an exciting time and you want to take your campus visits seriously, so they can help you make your decision.

When you start looking at college campuses, you should understand how you are going to really get a feel for the school. Each campus is unique and your experiences on each one will differ.

While you are looking through your options, it is important that you understand which options are actually viable. You do not want to set a goal that is unattainable and set yourself up for failure and disappointment before you even have the chance to succeed.

Finances often play a large role in the college choices that you will consider. When you are deciding between colleges, it may be beneficial to look at local community colleges to ensure that you have a finance friendly option within your list of choices.

Some studies have even shown that a clean living and working space reduces the stress put on an individual in that environment. With mitigated stress levels a student will be able to cope with the other stressors that occur naturally during college, such as exams, term papers, and finals.

After you have taken the official tour, you may want to meet with a professor within the field that you are interested in. Talk about the classes that you would take and get a feel for the department that you would be working in.

As you are getting to know the professor, you may want to attend one of his or her classes. Do not be afraid to talk to the professor about this option and ask if there is a student within the program that you would be able to schedule a meeting with while you are visiting.

Getting these meetings setting up ahead of time can be a great way to ensure that they actually happen. This can get complicated if you do not know what you are interested in and if you are in this position, you may just want to set a up a meeting with a general education counselor.

A financial aid counselor should be able to help you apply for federal aid and you want to make sure that you get this taken care of as soon as possible. After you know how you can pay for a specific school, you can then start looking into living accommodations and living costs.

Do not be afraid to the time that you need looking into your options early. If you decide that you do want to go to college you will be happy that you will be able to make a well-educated decision well before the deadlines roll around.
