The responsibilities that come with operating a crane are so great that any one intent on acquiring an Overhead Crane Operator Certification has to willing to accept them fully. An overview of the requirements is given below for one to follow. However, since every manufacturer has their own operations manual, one must be careful and read them for safety.

One must at least pass the requirements physically so as to be allowed to train in this operation. A good vision is required similar to that for acquiring a driving license. The ability to use effectively all four limbs is another factor. The person should be tall enough to see what is going on in the operations area comfortably. Good coordination between eyes, limbs and being devoid of any convulsive disorder is a requirement for this job. One must be able to understand basic signals like hands and warnings.

Every person intent on operating hoisting machine must be properly trained and tested. After the physical tests have been passed, the individual has to be thoroughly trained on running the machine safely and in most conditions. Only after this can he be issued a permit to operate the hoisting machine. This permit must be carried on the person all times of duty.

The training includes capacities of cranes and what they can attach. One should know the purpose of each control and to what limit they operate. Daily checks training is a must for the machine's operation and one should understand the sequence of starting up like electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic. All start up and shut down including emergency procedures must be understood. A person should learn all basic signals like hands, radio and even telephone signals where necessary.

The personal protective equipment for this job must be well understood so as to always be safe while operating this hoisting machine. Headgear is a must since loads are lifted above head level. The operator must wear safety harness and lanyards and any appliance that arrest falls.

Before every shift starts, the hoisting machine operator must go through a visual test and any defect has to be immediately reported to the supervisor. One has to check the hoisting limits on the drum, if less than 3 wraps then this must be reported for further action. In case of a power failure one must put all controllers in the off position.

Every this hoisting machine operator must ensure that any load attached to the crane is landed before they leave it unattended. And the controllers must be in the off position before leaving even for a short duration. Before switching off the main switch, always have the controllers in the off position and be safe all the time.

Only respond to signals from the controlling employee. The only time to respond to other employees is when they give the emergency stop signal which may save a life. Overhead Crane Operator Certification also looks at the operator's ability to perform regular checks on the hoisting machine and report faults or suspicions on a regular basis. For the long life of this hoisting machine and safety of personnel, a crane should undergo preventive maintenance.
