Finding An Electrician Licensed By The North Carolina State Board Of Examiners Of Electrical Contractors

By Kathy Kaufman

The North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors may appear to just be a disciplinary board. This is not the case. They are designed to protect homeowners, as well as to protect life, health and property of the general public. They do this by educating, licensing, and regulating of individuals proclaiming expertise as an electrician.

There are very definite regulations included in the NC General Statutes the address licenses and business practices of licensed electricians. It is essential when having construction and wiring done that the person doing it is licensed. They have undergone strict requirements for education and testing before being issued a license and being able to advertise that they are licensed.

There are some precautions to be aware of when getting work done by a professional. You should know exactly what you want done. Even if you don't know what it involves, exactly, know the result you want. For example, if you need repairs for flickering lights, or appliances constantly throwing a circuit breaker, you know what you want. If you want new installation, you know what that is as well.

Once you have determined what you need, get in contact with some professionals to get estimates. These can be someone you found online or in the yellow pages, or someone a friend recommended to you. You can sometimes get recommendations from suppliers where the contractors buy their supplies. They may not specify any one person, but can give you a list of recommended contractors.

You will need to compare the estimates you have gotten. It is a good idea to interview at least the two most promising ones. Be sure you understand exactly what they are including in the quote. Check licenses and certifications. If you have obtained referrals, check those as well. Ask for and check references from both past customers and businesses with which they do work. Any red flags are an indication to move to the next one on your list.

Make sure you get everything in writing, regardless to the results of your checking things. Verbal agreements are not usually a good idea, even between friends. They are not sufficient if you have to go to court if something doesn't work out. There is a potential for serious negative results if something goes wrong. You want to be sure you are protected. Only a written agreement is adequate.

In any construction or repair work such as this, there will be city ordinances to consider, and permits needed. There will also be an inspection at the end. Clarify who will arrange for all these, and what happens if inspection doesn't pass. Be sure the professional is going to correct what is wrong to make sure inspection can be passed. Have it all in writing so there is no misunderstanding.

The North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors is designed to protect you, the public. There are specified education requirements and certain business practices that must be followed. They are there to be sure you don't get ripped off.
