A single is worth a thousand words. There are different forms of art. People express their ideas and stories differently. Some people write, others talk while others act. Students in between the ages of 1-13 can use picture books as a form of learning visual communication. Some books are purely pictorial while others are a combination of written and pictures. The words must, however, relate directly to the picture in order to bring out the message. The techniques used in picture books make certain that the audience the book is meant for, and the purpose of it is clear.

Pictures can result from combining various lines or blocks of different colors. The color used in a picture also tells a lot. A dim picture may represent low key emotion while brightly colored pictures may suggest a lot of joy. Using border lines suggest dynamic feelings while shading brings out a sense of calmness and gentleness.

A teacher should challenge the students to find out the kinds of the technique used in various pictures. This actually allows them to know the purpose of the picture and the audience it is was meant for. This will actually go a long way as a student can be able to express themselves or send a message through a picture as long as they know how to use the different kinds of effects.

Narratives can be in the form of films, pictures or even novels. In all three, the story has three parts. The first is where the conflict is concocted. The conflict is the beginning of the story, and along the way, there is the second part which is the complications. This can be observed in picture books when the problem that was encountered seems to be growing bigger. The last part is the climax in which the problem is finally solved.

Symbolism is a major way of expressing oneself in literature. Picture books too do apply symbolism. For example, if on the cover of the book, it is dark and rainy and there is a person who appears very dimly, it shows the book could be a thriller or even scary. However, if there are animals on the cover they look happy, and there is a sun shining brightly, it suggests that it is a book full of joy.

The form is another thing associated with the picture book. For example, a film may appear in a set of flashbacks from the subplot. The subplot may contain the things that happened to the main plot. The same way, a picture book can be presented in a series of collages. The organization, style, and sequence affect the visual language.

Another majorly important thing is the setting of the story. For a setting of a long time ago, everything might appear a bit out dated. A modern-day story has things that are seen every day such as skyscrapers and modern vehicles. For a future based book, you may see some overly advanced technology.
