Professional Development For Teachers And Other Educators

By Francis Riggs

Instructors need to keep up with trends in education. Therefore most school districts offer professional development for teachers so they can stay abreast of the changes and additions to the curriculum and to instructional methods. This gives instructors the opportunity to grow and learn in their specific fields.

These are normally taught after school hours, on weekends, and all the way through summer. The more important ones that are based on core subject are sometimes even offered on regular school days.

During these courses, instructors get involved in a variety of learning exercises such as lectures, hands-on activities, and group instruction. It helps the educator get a realistic feel for how to conduct her class of regular students. The content will be taught as well as the proper method of teaching it. New methods of presenting materials, adding coursework, and engaging the attention of students will make the learning environment much more effective.

For example, a social studies teacher can attend workshops on history, geography, economics, and government. She can be introduced to new methods, updated information, and test-taking skills. Not only will she will learn much more about her area of expertise, she will also be taught in much the same way as the children will be. She would engage in many of the activities she would teach to her own class. This will help give her perspective from the children's point of view.

Often these workshops are held to introduce new technology or software. Upgraded equipment, new methods of taking attendance or grading students, online resources for specific subjects, and student-friendly websites are all examples of what can be covered in a seminar or workshop. Teaching teachers how to align their instruction with student testing may also be covered. Evaluation or assessment tools can also be the informative topic presented.

Getting families involved may also be the focus of a seminar. The more a parent is involved with their child's education, the more well adjusted and confident he will be in his studies in his early years and beyond. Teaching instructors how to reach out to parents and get their attention in helping with their child's educational requirements will go far in creating a wonderful learning environment for any student. This training is essential for new teachers and those who work in very low income areas.

Behavior issues can also be an important topic. How to improve the environment and provide fewer distractions, handling behavior issues, and dealing with accommodations are great issues to feature at a conference. These are very helpful to those who may have transferred to a school with more issues or a newly hired instructor. How to effectively discipline, arrangement of classroom, tools for better learning, and collaboration may all be covered during these classes.

It is extremely important for all instructors to keep abreast of all changes, improvements, and additions in the educational world. Attending any workshops, seminars and conferences that assist with this will help her immensely. She will be a more effective and much stronger instructor which will filter down to her students and help make them the best that they can be.
