Causes Of New York Traffic

By Tammie Caldwell

New York is among the most densely and highly populated cities in the world. There are therefore, many people who are travelling from one place to another; there are several means of travel that they may use. These include the railway network which is by trains or the airways by airplane. The most common means however, is by means of road network. Motor vehicles carts tricycles and movements of people are all causes of the New York traffic.

This phenomena basically refers to the no number of vehicles peoples or carts or animals that are moving from one direction to another. When these numbers exceed a certain limit, movement is hindered. This means that some vehicles or people may have to stop to allow others to move. When one car stops for example the one behind it must wait for it to start moving so it can also move.

The City, s super highways are big with some exceeding five lanes. One may thus wonder why we have traffic in this city. A major reason may be that the influx or numbers of vehicles that are entering the highway are more than those that are coming out. So traffic is hampered in the highway by several factors and not only the size of the road or lanes available.

If for example an accident was to occur or an incident in the middle of the road, then definitely traffic will result. So you can say that incidents or accidents cause jams. But the reserve is also true in that congestion's also results to accidents. In that case drivers are forced to use brake often to avoid collisions. These accidents may cause several lanes to be closed.

This city has projects and infrastructures that are always coming up. All this construction requires supplies which are delivered by slow moving large trucks. It is a common sight for this large motors moving very slowly on the lanes. Roads are also in need of repairs or expansions and these usually result to too many vehicles being stuck so as to allow the works to continue.

The winter period comes also with its own travel problems. The roads become very slippery during snowfall. There is also decreased visibility. The drivers have to drive slowly and persistently keep on braking. More time than usual is spent on the road . The amount of fuel consumed and other expenses will thus increase drastically. A cop dealing with an offender, an ambulance or a police chase out may also contribute to this menace.

Due to the various losses of both resources and time, it is important to curb this menace. The government in collaboration with the private sectors seeks alternative ways that can help to reduce or improve it. The available highways are not enough for the ever increasing number of vehicles. There is need to build and expand the existing ones. This however is a very expensive undertaking.

There are several ways that are in use in other cities that can be employed in New York to reduce it. This methods include, ramp metering whereby cars are allowed to enter roads at timed intervals. This has been showed to increase traffics speeds and lower accidents. The other is allocation of specific lanes to vehicles with high occupancy.
