How A Toxic Gas Detector Operates

By Jocelyn Davidson

Any place where there is chances of emission of toxic gasses in large amounts which are harmful to human beings, you find safety measured installed. Some of these safety measures is the use of the toxic gas detector to give alarm and lockdown the areas where the gases are detected to avoid further spreading to the working place. Have you ever asked yourself how these sensors work? Here is a look at the way they work.

Some toxic gas detectors are designed to be used only in the home while there are others designed to be used only for commercial settings. The warning given to individuals who monitor them can be either visual or audio. Some of these visuals come with settings to make sure shutdowns are automatically done to make sure the gas does not spread to other parts of the workplace or home.

There are those detectors which can only detect one kind of a gas while there are others which will detect multiple gases. In an industry where many toxic gases can be emitted the one for multiple gas detection is normally used instead of installing several single gas detectors in the plant.

They come as either portable or static for different uses. One factor that determines its portability is the size of the detector. Big sized ones are always strategically fixed in specific areas in the gas pipes within processing plants in an industry. The smaller ones can be moved from one place to another and are mostly used in homesteads.

Out of all the different detectors in the market, electrochemical sensors are used more for the detection of toxic gas. These sensors are amazing where the detection of gases such as chlorine, dangerous nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide are concerned. They are designed to come with electrode indicators and these indicators give an alarm when there is the presence of dangerous gases in the specific room or place where the sensors are fixed.

Another type of detector is the metal oxide semiconductor detectors normally abbreviated as MOS. They are made of a sensitive gas film which has tungsten oxides and tin oxides in it. These oxides react with the gases (mainly carbon monoxide gas) when the gases in that region pass through it. They are set to trigger an alarm system when the reaction level rises above a set limit indicating that the levels are higher than supposed to be.

The MOS are widely used especially in areas where there is low humidity since humidity does not affect how they operate. They have another advantage above the electrochemical sensors which is ability to not only detect toxic gases but also thermal gases. Once they are in your plant you will not need to install a different sensor for thermal gases.

The way in which the different gas detector types work are mostly different, but they all have important functions to make sure the health of all people in an area are assured. Deciding not to install these detectors in your home or workplace can be very disastrous for you and all others that live or work with you because toxic gases kill.
