Particulars On Slave Trade In America

By Tammie Caldwell

The trade thrived in the 18th century where the goods involved in trade increase significantly by the year. A huge number of slaves involved in the slave trade in America were from Angola as compared to other countries in Africa. The country also produced a quarter of all imports that were shipped to America. All slaves were got from Africa, and death rate over the years reduced as they discovered better ways to prevent these incidences. Most of these slaves were forced into America while there were those who went there willingly not knowing what they were getting themselves into. Most of these slaves were settled down in North America.

Most of the work involved working in farms. There were tea, sugarcane, maize, coffee and wheat farms among others. There were many whites who wanted slaves therefore one could only get a few of them. However, as they reproduced and more came into the country, the whites were able to acquire more slaves for themselves. One would buy the number of slaves they could afford.

The slaves in America were well kept as compared to those who were taken to other countries such as Brazil. This significantly reduced the number of deaths and increased the number of births hence with time, their number increased and the farms enjoyed the service of more slaves. When slaves reproduced, it was to the advantage of the farm owner since the laborers had increased without buying them.

The slaves comprised of both men and women. They were almost in equal numbers hence they were able to reproduce more naturally and increase in numbers. This significantly reduced the number of slaves that were taken from Africa as years went by as they were getting to be too many in America. In the first century, they had doubled, counting even the small children.

Those women who got pregnant were not treated any different as from those who were not pregnant. Most of them ended up having miscarriages while others died soon after birth or in the first year. This was due to poor child care. These slave children were also found to grow at a slower rate and were slower in class as compared to their white counterparts. They also fell sick more often.

At the beginning of the trade, the slaves lived in remote areas close to their masters houses. These areas were inhabited by only a few slaves who worked in the plantations. These slaves were bought from those who imported them from Africa. Therefore those whites who were not well off owned a few slaves or none at all. Men were generally more expensive than women.

Diseases were a major setback in the trade. The slaves often fell ill due to the poor living and working conditions they were exposed to. There were also poor and at times no medical care offered to them therefore most of them end up dying. They had no time to take care of themselves.

As time went by, the number of Americans who owned slaves went up. The south was also wealthier than the north and most of the people who owned masses of wealth lived in the south. The north however had more slaves, but considering the poor quality of work that they did, that side of the continent remained significantly poor.
