Fundamentals In Bridging The Gap And Learning New Language For Health

By Janet Wood

The idea of learning new language is fun. Taking in another language is just the first step of being an interpreter especially in medicinal area. A program was created for that and it is called Bridging the Gap Indianapolis.

It is a way of medical training for teaching another language to enhance communication. They also train them to be a medical interpreter. The event has topics like ethics, medical terms, the culture and a broad understanding of health care.

Few of fundamental cores that a translator for health should remember is the culture of where she or he is. In their work language is not the only thing that they should focus on. The discussion would go smoothly if the doctors and patients assumptions are similar, the communication will be go on without problems as the three have mutual understanding of the medicine.

Ethics should also be applied in any type of work. But in this specific work, should be straight forward and uncomplicated. Interpreters know that even a simple task could be complicated, complication is avoidable. Even the smallest task could turn into a series of dilemmas. Also, doctor and the patient should trust the interpreter as he is the only way they would understand each other, and in translator side, he cannot abuse this power, he should not.

Medical translating has been a common practice in medicinal world. But some have disagreed with this because of misconceptions that it has arisen. One of few is that any person who knew two or three language could immediately be certified medical translator. But one does not qualified to be translator in medical field if one does not understand or in fluent in health care, it just could not work that way.

Letting someone who possess knowledge to speak another speech can be an interpreter, It ordinary practice in health world, though the probability of risks here is high. Untrained interpreter does not know the truly rule of interpreter, the ethnics, techniques in proper patient communication, and vocabulary. If they made mistakes in live then there should be consequences, for example one false translation might lead to the patient in emergency room.

This program is for connecting those people that cannot interact properly and shy. There are a lot of events involving this program, there would be sharing of interpreting skills and discussion of health care information and ways of improving in medicinal translating. The intensive training improves the person knowledge of the matter.

The flow of the translation also attributes to the smoothness and accuracy of the interpretation. They should also add friendly but still professional interaction as communicating to the patient. It will lessen the tension between each other and would build solid understanding even for a short time.

Lastly, one should explain the traditional health beliefs to the locals in a way that they understand. Using words and equivalent term of English medical word is one way of delivering the message to them, gestures helps too. And sometimes keeping a straight face helps in avoiding any inappropriate.
