Green infrastructures refer to engineered ecological systems that act as living infrastructures because they are built to cultivate ecosystems. Meanwhile, companies that operate on a larger scale, pushing the agenda for helping the environment, can incorporate this means of construction to large neighborhoods, major institutions, and small towns.

There are small and large scale applications of GI and perhaps the most basic one is known as the rain garden. Rain gardens can be planted almost anywhere. These patches of land help absorb rainwater from rooftops, streets, and sidewalks. Dense urban areas can benefit from what are called plant boxes. These small urban rain gardens can absorb runoff from sidewalks and parking lots.

Others might think that permeable pavements are created as architectural designs. In fact, they do serve an important purpose. By storing and trapping rainwater, it can be prevented from draining into sewers. Areas highly susceptible to flooding can greatly benefit from these pavements. Alleys and streets that have incorporated the GI design also deliver the same function as permeable pavements. At the same time, they also brighten up pathways and sidewalks.

GI hopes to build an interconnected ecological network operating at a variety of scales. Green spaces are constructed not only to enhance environmental values, but also to serve functional purposes that ultimately benefit the community. Clean water, clean air, climate regulation, and flood prevention are just some of its benefits.

More trees and plants strategically planted around urban areas can significantly reduce the metropolitan heat. Marine life thriving in bodies of water also benefit from diminished water pollution with stormwater management. Apart from its practical functions, GI spaces are wonderful for recreational activities.

There are urban planners that insist on some drawbacks that come with GI planning. These include maintenance costs, fire hazards, and interference with power lines. In order to deliver these environmental solutions without a hitch, intensive planning and assessments are vital. Urban development plans do not have to be thrown out in favor of GI, but these green concepts should rather be incorporated into them instead. With ample preparations and phased implementation, the applications of GI do not necessarily have to disturb our established practices.
