The Importance Of Building Schools In Africa Slums

By Diane Schmidt

It is sad that in the 21st century, poverty is still a major problem in the world. If more than 45 million Americans are living in poverty, the poverty problem is definitely a major one in the African continent. That is because most of Africa is the third world while the USA is in the first world. There are many unique third world problems. The schooling problem in this part of the world can be addressed by building schools in Africa slums. In informal settlements, they are very few schools. Thus, more need to be built.

Building a school is just as important as building a hospital. That is because; it is the school that will create people who will work in the hospital. There is need to have as many schools as possible in the developing world because currently the number is too small. In some slums, it is hard to find a school.

The West is far advanced as far as schooling is concerned. There is not only top notch and adequate elementary level institutions but also Ivy League institutions that produce the best doctors, engineers and researchers. That is not the case in African and Asian informal settlements. In some places, the government does not even care about the dire situation.

Corruption is robbing the African continent and the poor in slums are the ones who are suffering the most. Children are being robbed of their future because the monies that are supposed to build education institutions are being misused. That is a very sad reality that is making this beautiful and great continent to be in a very bad position.

If the relevant authority cannot build a school where children can learn, that should not lead to hopelessness. Private entities can as well take initiative. Things are always good, when people take initiative in their own hands. Waiting for the government, all the time, is usually not the right way of thinking. People can mobilize resources to help the poor.

When one facilitates the education of a child, he has educated the whole slum. That is because education will make that child to get out of the slum and in the process he will make many other people to get out of the slum in question. When someone is given education, he is given the power to change his life.

Every child has a right to learn. Unfortunately, that is not the case with children who live in some African informal settlements. That is because; there are families that cannot afford the cost of education. Even in the direst situations, there are no schools in some slums. Thus, there is no way that children in such places can obtain much needed education.

At no time should learning be considered a privilege. It should always be a basic human need just like water, food, shelter and education. Children need to be treated of the disease of ignorance that is the number one killer. This disease can only be treated in a school. When a school is built in a slum, many children get the opportunity to learn.
