The University Of Florida And Learning Centre

The West Florida Seminary, founded in 1851, began operating in 1857, only twelve years after Florida achieved statehood. It was located on the hill where the Westcott Building now stands, which has been the site of an institution of higher education longer than any other site in Florida.

FSU had its beginning with a grant from the Legislature of the State of Florida in a Legislative Act of January 1851, to establish two seminaries of learning on the east and west of the Suwannee River. Accordingly, by 1854, the City of Tallahassee established a school for boys, known as the Florida Institute.

The school's beginnings date as far back as 1823, when the Territorial Legislature began discussing plans for a system of higher education. FSU was founded in 1851 as a small public institution. It became a four-year school in 1901 and received university status and its current name in 1947. The institution existed in many different forms prior to becoming a university, including separate male and female colleges.

In each succeeding decade, Florida State University has added to its academic organization and presently is composed of 16 independent colleges. It has expanded from the original few acres and buildings to 542 buildings on 1,550 acres, including the downtown Tallahassee main campus of 451.6 acres, a farm which for many decades supplied the Florida State College for Women with food, the Seminole Reservation â€" a recreational facility, the Marine Laboratory on the Gulf Coast, the Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering facility, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and Division of Research at Florida State’s Southwest Campus, and the branch campus in Panama City, Fla.

FSU's mission is serving "as a center for advanced graduate and professional studies while emphasizing research and providing excellence in undergraduate programs."

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Florida University flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags made by American manufacturers. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Florida University flag for the future.
