Custom Thermocouples Have To Be Very Exact

By Christa Jarvis

Special jobs require special tools. Custom thermocouples are made to measure temperatures with special sensors. They consist of two different wire points and are made from different types of metals. They are then welded together at one end which then will end up making a junction. This point is where the temperature will be measured.

These devices measure temperature while having two different conductors that make contact with each other at several spots. It will then produce voltage when the temperature of one is different to the position of the other parts on a circuit. This is a type of temperature sensor that is able to convert temperature pitch into electricity.

The most basic or Base Metal ones are J, K, T and E and are the commonly used. The Noble Metals are R, S and B and are used in all high temperature applications. They can be found in all paper and pulp, pharmaceutical as well as power generated companies. In the modern home they are found in toasters, stoves and furnaces.

Some special options are available when ordering this specific make. One can add certain chemical resistant coatings and well as ceramic lining sheaths. These sleeves can be moved into right angles and material certificates are included as well.

Pyroprocessing is used to change materials with temperature of over 800 degrees Celsius to bring about a change in the physical and compound change. Different names for this process are known to be calcinations, sintering as well as ore-roasting. Other equipment besides the kilns is reverberatory and electric arc furnaces.

Type E comes from nickel chromium and has a strong signal and the exactness is higher than the above mentioned ones. N is very much the same as E but does tend to be a little more expensive. The ones that are more commonly used in Pharmaceutical industries and Biotech are the S type. They are made from platinum rhodium and are very stable with a very high precision point. The S, R and B types are all made from precious metals and this is why they are so expensive but very accurate and stable. They are all able to be used with very high temperatures.

The sheaths are all made from stainless steel as they are all lucrative and don't corrode very easily. The best one to use is the 316SS as the 304SS is not as resistant to corrosion as the other. The difference in price is not much so it is up to one's own discretion which would be the best to use.

All thermocouples produce a small signal, as small as millivolts in magnitude. If there is a poor contact between the junctions or if very thin wires are used to speed up the thermal response is could disconnect. There is not only one type of wire that is used with these devices but two, one is the normal standard type and the other has specialized grades. The use of them will depend on the level of precision that is needed for each custom thermocouple.
